I thought I’d follow this up and elaborate a bit on it incase there’s some people not looped in on social media.

I try to make the joining/ photo situation as easily accessible as I can by not charging for either of them.

The main focus of my business is all about finding work for the Artist.  Part of this involves keeping the Artists’ photos up to date.  I give up my own time approx. 3-4 times a year, at no cost to the Artist (except their time), and it saddens me when I see the photos that I’ve taken in good faith being used on my competitors’ websites.

For an Artist to update their photos every 6months to a year would cost approx. £50-£60* per session so circa £100-£120* per year for photos alone.  Most agencies charge a joining fee of between £35-65* per year.  I choose not to do that.  It’s a personal choice.  I have always found that a little bit of goodwill goes a long way and I’d opt for a happy, professional workforce above all else. Having said that, I’m not having a go at anyone who does charge.  Everyone runs their business as they see fit. *Average Scottish rates.

I give up my own time, for free, to make sure that we have the right marketing material to give a uniformed approach to our base when submitting look-books for work.  This approach has been working great for us and I’m happy to continue this way, but this will only work if we have complete transparency/ honesty.

It’s the Artists’/ Agents’/ Platforms’ responsibility to get their own marketing material for promotion.  I’m not going to work for free so that a whole host of other businesses can benefit from my efforts.  That’s just crazy.  No one would do that.

Now that everyone has had fair warning I’m sure this won’t be an issue, but in future I will be invoicing anyone who has used my photos without permission.

I know my base/ people well enough to know that there are genuine cases of people who just didn’t realise, but there are also people whom I have asked to remove my photos from one platform, only to find them on another two.  It’s so disappointing.

If anyone would like to buy my photos for other uses, please get in touch and we can sort something out for a nominal fee.  Please don’t just use them.  I don’t make money from photos – I make money by finding my SA’s work and I’m happy with that.  On the other hand, it’s still a business I’m running.

The photos are free for a reason, so that you and I can benefit from them but not so that everyone else can too.

I’m not looking to fall out with anyone, or pointing the finger. This is a message to the entire base.

Let’s make this work for everyone though, and not ruin it, we’ve got a good thing going here.

Kind regards,

Alana
